Originally the chapel of the Doge, St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) became important in 829, when the remains of St. Mark came to Venice from Alexandria and were interred here. The present ground-plan, derived from the Church of the Apostles at Constantinople, dates from 1063. In 1075, the Doge passed a law requiring all returning.
